Safe Seas

Overfishing, illegal poaching, and certain types of fishing techniques or gear threaten ocean ecosystems and sea life.  Turtles, albatrosses, sharks, and other marine animals are victims of unintended fishing-related deaths.

Blue Ocean has worked with scientists, regulators, fishing industry leaders, and conservationists to reduce the unintended catch of marine life.   We promote effective, practical solutions for the benefit and balance of ocean ecosystems.  New fishing methods or low-cost equipment changes can help animal populations recover.

In 2008, funds from the Moore Foundation helped support a study by scientist Nigel Brothers on the bycatch of albatross on longline hooks.  Click here to view "How Accurate Are Observer Reported Kills of Albatross on Longlines?" a joint project by Blue Ocean Institute and Duke University.
